How a jacket comes together

Every jacket follows the same five steps, and none of them are skipped.

  1. Choose the hide

    Lambskin for a soft drape, cowhide for weight, sheepskin for warmth. The hide is matched to the style.

  2. Cut the pattern

    Panels are cut to the size you ordered, working around the natural marks in the hide.

  3. Stitch the seams

    Heavy thread, short stitches and reinforced stress points at the shoulders and pockets.

  4. Finish the edges and hardware

    Zips, snaps and buckles go on last. Then the edges are sealed and the lining is set.

  5. Check before it ships

    Every seam, zip and measurement is checked against your order.

Care

Looking after leather

A good jacket lasts for decades if you treat it right. Three habits cover most of it.

Hang it wide

Use a wide shouldered hanger and a breathable cover, never plastic. Keep it away from radiators and direct sun.

Wipe, do not soak

A soft damp cloth removes dust. If the jacket gets wet, let it dry in open air and never on a heater.

Condition twice a year

A light leather conditioner keeps the hide supple. Test it on an inside seam first.

Before you order

How should a leather jacket fit?

The shoulder seams sit on the edge of your shoulder bone, the sleeves end at your wrist bone and you can zip it over a sweater. Leather relaxes a little with wear, so a snug fit on day one is normal.

Lambskin or cowhide?

Lambskin is soft, light and drapes well. Cowhide is heavier and stiffer and takes longer to break in, but it is tougher. Shearling is sheepskin with the wool left on the inside for warmth.

How can I tell real leather from faux?

Real hide has an uneven grain and small natural marks. It smells like leather, and the raw edge shows fibers. Faux leather has a repeating pattern and a smooth plastic edge.
